The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care continues to work towards better health care for Ontarians with stewardship becoming the ministry's mission and mandate. This stewardship role means that the ministry will provide overall direction and leadership for the system, focusing on planning and guiding resources to bring value to Ontario’s health system.
The Bariatric Surgery Strategy was developed in order to increase Ontario’s capacity to provide both medical and surgical components of bariatric treatment to morbidly obese adults and children in Ontario. It is based in large part on the recommendations of the Ontario Health Technology report, of the Health Technology Utilization Guidelines (HealthTUGO), Expert Panel on Bariatric Surgery and on criteria established by the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
Together, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, the Centre for Surgical Invention and Innovation and Ontario's Bariatric Centres will pave the way to improved health care for people suffering from obesity and obesity related diseases.
